Medical Minute - 1:28

Steve Williams: The 3WZ Medical Minute is brought to you by Mount Nittany Health. We’re visiting with Dr. Ted Hovick, department of ob-gyn for Mount Nittany Physician Group and the chairman of the department of ob-gyn at Mount Nittany Medical Center. Dr. Hovick, thank you for joining us today. In general, how many extra calories should a woman eat when she’s pregnant compared with her previous diet?

Dr. Hovick: Thanks for asking that question, because that’s one that is often misinterpreted. People really don’t need that many extra calories. If you want a specific number, we’re talking about 1,800 – 2,000 calories per day, but it’s more important what you eat than the total amount.

Steve Williams: Morning sickness affects many women during pregnancy. When it comes to food, do you have any tips to relieving morning sickness?

Dr. Hovick: Morning sickness gets its name because most people experience it when they have an empty stomach, which is first thing in the morning. So one of the tricks is to get something in right away, and we’re talking about something bland like Cheerios® or unsalted crackers.

Steve Williams: How can women tackle unhealthy food cravings?

Dr. Hovick: A lot of women think when they’re pregnant they have a license to eat anything, and that is not true at all. The baby never needs a Peanut Buster® Parfait or a trip to the Creamery. Good, healthy eating is the same when you are not pregnant as when you are pregnant.

Steve Williams: Dr. Hovick, where can residents go for more information?

Dr. Hovick: We have an excellent website at mountnittany.org, or you can just give our office a call at 814.237.3470.

Steve Williams: The 3WZ Medical Minute is brought to you by Mount Nittany Health.
