Dave Kurten: The 3WZ Medical Minute is brought to you by Mount Nittany Health System. Our topic this week: pain management. Our guest: Dr. Jennifer Gilbert. Thanks for joining us today.

Dr. Gilbert: Thank you, Dave.

Kurten: Most people experience pain now and then in different parts of their body, but what is necessary for someone to see a pain management specialist?

Dr. Gilbert: My goal at the pain clinic is to help patients improve their quality of life and manage the pain that they feel, to bring it from an intolerable to a tolerable level. Typically, I see patients whose pain has lasted greater than six months following an accident or injury, or having pain in their legs or experience pain related to another condition. Typically, I’d have community members come and see me or a member of my clinic after they’ve been having pain for at least six months, or if their primary care physician makes a recommendation to come to the pain clinic.

Dave Kurten: What types of illnesses and injuries does the pain management clinic team treat?

Dr. Gilbert: At the Pain Management Clinic, we typically see patients who have low back pain that may be or may not be radiating into the legs, pain in the neck that radiates into the arms, cancer, pain from a shingles episode, any kind of musculoskeletal or peripheral nerve-type of burning pain.

Dave Kurten: How does the Pain Management Clinic treat the pain associated with these types of injuries and illnesses?

Dr. Gilbert: We offer a wide range of injection therapies, as well as medical management of pain at the Mount Nittany Medical Center pain clinic. It really just depends on the patient’s diagnosis – how we go and treat the pain – but oftentimes, a combination of injection therapy, as well as medicine and physical therapy, leads to the best outcome for patients.

Dave Kurten: How can community members learn more about the Pain Management Clinic and the treatment it offers?

Dr. Gilbert: I would ask the community members to either look on the Mount Nittany Medical Center website, which is mountnittany.org, to call our clinic at 814.237.3360, or to speak with their family physician for a referral. I’d be happy to assist them in any way we can.

Dave Kurten: Dr. Gilbert, thank you for your time today.

Dr. Gilbert: Thank you, Dave.

Dave Kurten: Dr. Jennifer Gilbert has been our guest on this edition of the Medical Minute. The 3WZ Medical Minute is brought to you by Mount Nittany Health System. Mount Nittany – Life Forward.
