"Dave Kurten: The 3WZ medical Minute is brought to you by Mount Nittany Medical Center Life Moving Forward. Our topic this week is the upcoming Heart Walk. Our guest is Gail Miller, Vice President for Quality at Mount Nittany Medical Center.     Thank you for joining us today again.

Gail Miller: It’s a pleasure to be here thank you

Dave Kurten: What does the Heart Walk support?

Gail Miller: Many people do not realize this but heart disease is the number one killer of both men and women. And while we have made great strides in reducing mortality and illness from heart disease there’s much more to do. Funds raised from the heart walk go to improving care for people with heart disease. But also raising awareness about heart disease and healthy lifestyles. Some of the funds also go to other education efforts and research. In 2007 and 2008 the American Heart Association contributed more than one hundred and sixty million dollars towards research. In fact, of the funds raised by the American Heart Association, twenty-five percent of them come heart walk activities. The Centre County Heart Walk is really the premier fundraising event in our area for the American Heart Association.  And the Heart Walk not only raises funds but it’s a great way to raise awareness of the importance of regular exercise in maintaining a healthy heart. A sedentary lifestyle is one of the leading risk factors for heart disease.

Dave Kurten: When and where will this year's Heart Walk be held?

Gail Miller: This years heart walk is on Saturday October 16th Registration is at Noon and the walk begins at one o’clock in the afternoon. The walk is rain or shine and it begins at Medlar Field at Lebrano Park. We are expecting over seven hundred and fifty walkers this year and our fundraising goal is fifty thousand dollars.

Dave Kurten: How can people participate?

Gail Miller: Businesses and organizations can support the heart walk by sponsorship or by forming company teams made up by employees and their family and friends. That’s what Mount Nittany medical Center is doing. Individual walkers then raise money for the heart Walk. For people that are unable to walk, they can sponsor a walker in this year’s Heart Walk.

Dave Kurten: How long has Mount Nittany Medical Center participating in the walk?

Gail Miller:  Well Mount Nittany Medical Center has been very proud to be a corporate sponsor for seven years. Our employees began participating in the heart walk in 2002. This year our employees have set a goal of
One hundred walkers and we are well on our way to that goal.
