Medical Minute; 3:29

Steve Williams: It’s time for the Mount Nittany Medical Minute. We’re joined by Amy Leffard, certified diabetes educator at Mount Nittany Medical Center. Amy, thanks for joining us today.

Amy Leffard: Hey, thanks for having me.

Steve Williams: What are diabetes self management education classes? You’ve got these coming up, right?

Amy Leffard: We do indeed. Um, diabetes self management education classes are classes that are offered to the public to help them learn more about living a healthy life with diabetes. Some of the topics, like the importance of physical exercise, eating a healthy diet, and monitoring blood glucose levels, um, to help them prevent long term complications, um, are covered in these classes. The classes are interactive and people get the chance to meet and learn from others that attend that have diabetes.

Steve Williams: Why is it important for people with diabetes, uh, and their loved ones to attend?

Amy Leffard: Well, basically, so they can learn how to manage their diabetes on a day to day basis. People with diabetes may only see their physicians 3 or 4 times a year, but they’re going to have to make decisions that affect their diabetes many times a day. Um, so it falls to them and the people that they live with, uh, to have the necessary skills and knowledge so they can live as healthy as possible.

Steve Williams: Uh, when and where are the classes held?

Amy Leffard: Well, we have classes about every other month at Mount Nittany Medical Center. Uh, the next classes are starting on September 1st, and they’re evening classes from 6-8:30 PM. Then, in November, we’re going to have morning classes that are from 9:30 in the morning until noon, and those will start on November 3rd. These classes run for 4 weeks, and then there’s a 3 month follow up afterwards.

Steve Williams: Uh, where can the folks, uh, learn about the program?

Amy Leffard:  You can go to our website at www.mountnittany.org, or you can call 231-7095.

Steve Williams: The 3WZ Medical Minute is brought to you by Mt. Nittany Medical Center – “Mt. Nittany Life Forward”.
