Medical Minute; 2:04

Dave Kurten:  The 3WZ Medical Minute is brought to you by Mt. Nittany Medical Center – “Mt. Nittany Life Forward”.  Our topic this week is diabetes and we are joined once again by Dr. Jan Ulbrecht, Professor of Bio Behavioral Health and Medicine, Co-director of Penn State’s Institute for Diabetes and Obesity, thanks for joining us today.

Dr. Ulbrecht:  Thank you for having me.

Dave Kurten:  Tell me about the diabetes screening and discussion.

Dr. Ulbrecht:  Well the diabetes screening and discussion about diabetes and pre-diabetes will take place on Monday, March 22nd.  The screening will start at 5:30pm in the afternoon and the discussion itself will be at 6:30pm at the Mt. Nittany Medical Center’s Main Auditorium.

Dave Kurten:  Why is it important for community members to attend?

Dr. Ulbrecht:  Well, you know, I think everybody knows by now that diabetes is becoming a huge epidemic in the US and in the world as a whole.  And it is really important to be diagnosed early, and now it is in fact recognized that pre-diabetes can precede diabetes by 10-15 years and the earlier someone is diagnosed and treated, the better the outcomes, the more diabetes can be delayed and so forth.  So it is very important for people to understand that being tested early really makes a difference.

Dave Kurten:  Who should be screened for diabetes?

Dr. Ulbrecht:  The honest answer to that is almost everybody.  Certainly as we get older, the risk increases and over the age of 45 it is recommended that everybody be screened regardless of risk factors.  But in fact, anybody who is overweight, anybody who has a family member with diabetes, anybody who was born over 10 pounds, women who had diabetes during pregnancy; all of these people are at high risk and should be screened really starting from teenage-hood onward.

Dave Kurten:  Where can community members get more information about the program?

Dr. Ulbrecht:  Probably the best place to go is the website of the Mt. Nittany Medical Center which I think is mtnittany.org.

Dave Kurten: Dr. Jan Ulbrecht has been our guest on this edition of 3WZ’s Medical Minute, thank you for joining us today!

Dr. Ulbrecht:  Thank you for having me.
